The flood situation remained grim in nine districts of Assam on Thursday due to continuous rains after the cyclone ‘Remal’, where the water level of major rivers has risen and large areas have been inundated. About 1.98 lakh people have been affected by rain and floods in the state. Officials gave this information.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials said 1,98,856 people have been affected in Nagaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Hojai, Golaghat, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong.
He said one person died due to drowning in Hailakandi district, taking the death toll due to floods and rains in the state since Tuesday to six, while 18 others are injured.
He said Cachar district is the worst affected by the floods and 1,02,246 people are stranded in flood waters. After this 36,959 people are stranded in flood waters in Karimganj, 22,058 in Hojai and 14,308 in Hailakandi.
Officials said a total of 3,238.8 hectares of crops have been submerged and 2,34,535 cattle have also been affected.
According to reports, the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers and their tributaries are flowing above the danger mark at many places in the affected districts.
Officials said a total of 35,640 people have taken shelter in 110 relief camps, with the highest number of 19,646 people in Hojai, followed by 12,110 in Cachar, 2,060 in Hailakandi and 1,613 in Karimganj.
