Amid ongoing violence in Manipur, Manipur police on Sunday imposed curfew in both districts of Imphal till further notice. This comes after six people were found dead. Following the incident, the Manipur government has shut down the internet in seven districts.
Authorities have recently imposed curfew in Imphal West and Imphal East amid tension. Vehicular traffic on the roads can be seen less with the deployment of security personnel. Security has been tightened outside Chief Minister Biren Singh’s residence and Raj Bhavan.
Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee expresses deep concern
Meanwhile, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing unrest in Manipur, which has claimed five lives, caused widespread displacement of communities and damaged ancestral properties.
“We strongly condemn the violence and urge all stakeholders (stakeholders) to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation and peacebuilding efforts. The existing situation is destabilizing not only for the people of Manipur,” the release said , rather a serious threat to the harmony and security of the entire northeastern region.”
The committee asked the central government to take immediate and decisive steps
The Committee urged the Central Government to take immediate and decisive action to restore law and order.
“The NPCC calls on the Government of India to take immediate and decisive steps to restore law and order, address the underlying causes of conflict and ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens. Affected people including displaced families,” the statement said must provide adequate assistance and rebuild trust between the diverse communities that exist.”
Police said they had arrested 23 people involved in the violence
The NPCC appealed to the people of Manipur to refrain from violence and work collectively for unity and peace. Manipur police officials on Sunday said they had arrested 23 persons who were part of a mob involved in alleged “vandalism and arson of houses”. These persons were arrested from Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts of the state.
Police officials also recovered a .32 pistol, seven rounds of SBBL bullets and eight mobile phones from their possession, police said.
Curfew imposed as tensions escalated, internet, mobile data also shut down
Amid rising tension in the state, a total curfew has been imposed in Imphal till the next order. Afterwards, the government immediately suspended internet and mobile data services for two days.
Violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year, when clashes broke out during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the Maitei community’s demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe category.
