A Delhi Court on Monday accepted the Delhi Police’s ‘closure report’ seeking quashing of the POCSO case filed by a wrestler (when she was a minor) who had accused former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual assault. “Quashing of the case is accepted,” Additional Sessions Judge Gomti Manocha said.

During in-chamber proceedings on August 1, 2023, the ‘minor’ had told the judge that she was satisfied with the Delhi Police’s investigation in the case and did not oppose the ‘closure report’. The Delhi Police had filed the report on June 15, 2023 seeking quashing of the case involving the girl after her father made a shocking claim midway through the investigation that he had lodged a false complaint of sexual assault against Brij Bhushan to avenge the alleged injustice meted out to the girl.

The Delhi Police had recommended dropping the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh but the case against him for sexual assault in a separate case filed by six women wrestlers continues.

The police had recommended quashing the complaint involving the minor wrestler, saying no concrete evidence was found. The POCSO Act provides for a minimum imprisonment of three years, depending on the section under which the case is registered. Brij Bhushan, a former BJP MP, has consistently denied the allegations.
