CJ (Chiriyankandath Joseph) Roy, chairman of the Confident Group, committed suicide by shooting himself at his company office in Richmond Circle, Central Bengaluru, around 3:15 pm on Friday. According to the police, no income tax officials were present at the scene at the time of the incident.
It is reported that a team from the Kerala Income Tax Department had been conducting searches and questioning at Roy’s office for the past three days. Upon receiving news of the suicide, the income tax officials halted their operation. Bengaluru police have stated that all necessary information will be obtained from the IT department as part of the investigation. Evidence is being collected from the office premises, and the situation is expected to become clearer after examining records and statements.
Roy owned a private jet and over 200 luxury cars.
Roy, with a net worth of approximately ₹9,000 crore, owned a private jet and over 200 luxury cars, including 12 Rolls-Royces. Originally from Kerala, Roy’s business extended to Karnataka and Dubai. The Confident Group is a major name in real estate in Kerala and Karnataka.
Following the incident, Roy’s wife, Lini Roy, and son, Rohit, arrived at the post-mortem center at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru on Saturday. Police are determining whether to register the case as an unnatural death or under sections related to abetment of suicide. The Police Commissioner has confirmed that a complaint has been filed by a director of the Confident Group.
High-level investigation will be conducted – DK Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has stated that a high-level investigation will be conducted into the matter. Meanwhile, Roy’s elder brother alleged that he took this step due to pressure from central agencies. He said that Roy had no debts and that the income tax officials would have to answer what happened that led his brother to commit suicide.
According to reports, the Kerala Income Tax team first arrived in Bengaluru on December 3, 2025, and stayed for a few days. The operation resumed on January 28, for which CJ Roy was summoned from Dubai. He had been questioned daily for the past three days.

CJ Roy’s family includes his wife, son Rohit, and daughter Riya. Roy was also known for his love of luxury cars. He had said that after being humiliated at a car showroom at the age of 13, he dreamt of owning the world’s most expensive cars. At the age of 36, he bought his first private jet without any bank loan.
In 1994, Roy bought a Maruti 800 for Rs 1.10 lakh, which he sold in 1997. In 2025, he announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for anyone who could find the same car again. With the help of friends, he found the car and bought it back. His collection also includes supercars like the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari, Koenigsegg Agera, McLaren, and Lamborghini. Roy often used to say, “Cars are a hobby, real wealth is land.”
