A cloudburst, accompanied by torrential rains, has caused massive devastation in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. Seven people have been reported missing. Late Wednesday night, a cloudburst brought heavy debris to Nanda Nagar, reducing six houses to rubble.

Relief and rescue operations underway

Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and Public Works Department have been deployed in the affected area. JCB machines and other equipment have also been deployed to clear debris and assist in relief operations.

Two people were pulled alive from the debris, while search and rescue operations are ongoing despite extremely adverse conditions. Officials have confirmed that a medical team along with three ambulances have reached the site.

10 people missing, 6 houses destroyed

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said, “A cloudburst on Wednesday night caused damage in the Nandanagar Ghat area of ​​Chamoli district. Six houses in the Kuntri Langafali ward of Nandanagar were buried under debris. Seven people are missing, while two have been rescued. Relief and rescue operations are underway.”

Local residents reported that many residents are still trapped in their homes after the cloudburst. Authorities have deployed ground teams to locate the missing, although the threat of further landslides remains.

Heavy Rain Alert

Heavy rain is expected in Chamoli. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for more heavy rain in Chamoli in the coming days. People have been urged to be cautious.

In view of the situation, the state government has issued a red alert for Dehradun, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Paurigarh, and Chamoli. Residents have been warned about the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, landslides, infrastructure collapse, and increasing deaths until September 20.

Devastation in Dehradun

This incident follows a devastating cloudburst in Sahastradhara, Dehradun, four days earlier, which killed at least 13 people. That disaster washed away roads, damaged shops and homes, and destroyed two major bridges.

During this time, the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun also suffered extensive damage. The cloudburst and heavy rainfall in Sahastradhara caused the Tamsa River to swell, flooding the temple complex. Several feet of sand and debris entered the temple complex, submerging the Shivalinga and causing deep cracks in the walls.
