Tensions flared again on Friday in Tarana town of Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh, stemming from a dispute that began the previous day over giving way to a bus. In the afternoon, a mob set several buses on fire, vandalized shops, and threw stones in multiple locations. Police used force to bring the situation under control. A heavy police presence has been deployed to maintain order.

The entire dispute originated from a minor argument on the night of January 22nd over a bus giving way. The argument quickly escalated into communal tension between two communities, leading to incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson. The situation worsened on Friday when unidentified miscreants vandalized several buses, set two buses on fire, and spread panic by throwing stones. Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said that a case of attempted murder has been registered against six people in connection with the incident. He appealed to the public to maintain peace and assured that strict action is being taken against the culprits. According to SP Sharma, the incident is related to an attack on a young man named Sohail Thakur, who was seriously injured after being attacked from behind by some youths. He was referred to Ujjain for treatment after sustaining a serious head injury. His condition is currently reported to be stable. SP Sharma said that based on the victim’s complaint, police have registered a case against Sappan Mirza, Ishan Mirza, Shadab alias Idli, Salman Mirza, Rizwan Mirza, and Naved. Five of them have been arrested, while four others are being questioned.

Earlier, communal tensions had also erupted in Tarana tehsil after an attack on a VHP-Bajrang Dal worker. Protesters vandalized about a dozen buses parked at the bus stand, after which a heavy police force was deployed. Due to the tensions, markets remained closed on Friday, and continuous police patrolling was conducted in sensitive areas. On Friday morning, workers from Hindu organizations once again surrounded the Tarana police station, demanding that the houses of the accused be demolished and that the perpetrators be paraded through the streets. The protesters staged a sit-in outside the police station and recited the Hanuman Chalisa. Despite attempts by the administration and police officials to reason with them, the protesters remained adamant in their demands.

Police say that all the accused involved in the incident are being arrested and that CCTV footage is being reviewed, which may lead to an increase in the number of accused. Videos circulating on social media show scenes of arson and tension, although these have not been independently verified. Due to Basant Panchami and Friday coinciding, senior police officers have been deployed as a precautionary measure. A company of the Special Task Force (STF) and approximately 300 police personnel are stationed at the site. The administration has appealed to both sides to maintain peace.
