The case involves the former mayor of Haikou, the capital of Hainan province, and a senior party official, who was sentenced to death for corruption by a Chinese court.
Videos and photos widely shared on social media show piles of gold bars and bundles of cash, with users claiming that investigators found “tons of gold” and “tons of cash” during the raids. These images have sparked debate, anger, and disbelief worldwide, while experts are cautioning against accepting unverified figures circulating online.
What the Court Officially Confirmed
Chinese state media and court records confirmed that the former mayor of Haikou was convicted of bribery, abuse of power, and embezzlement of public funds. The court ruled that he illegally enriched himself over many years by using his position.
According to investigators, he accepted bribes in exchange for awarding government contracts, approving land deals, and providing favors to businesses and developers. This corruption reportedly took place between 2009 and 2019, a period during which major construction and land development projects were underway.
The court sentenced him to death, a sentence often handed down in China for very serious corruption cases. In many such cases, the sentence may later be commuted to life imprisonment, depending on behavior and cooperation, although authorities have not publicly clarified this detail in this case.
Social media posts, including one shared by the international news aggregator NEXTA, claimed that investigators found 13.5 tons of gold and 23 tons of cash inside properties linked to the former official. The same posts also claimed that he owned luxury real estate in China and abroad, as well as a collection of expensive cars. Billions in illegally acquired assets seized
It has been officially confirmed that assets worth billions of dollars have been seized and handed over to the government. These included properties, cash, valuables, and other items acquired through corruption.
The court stated that the former mayor’s actions had caused “enormous losses” to the government and severely damaged public trust. The judges described the case as one of the biggest corruption scandals involving a city-level official in recent Chinese history.
China has been conducting an anti-corruption campaign for more than a decade. Hundreds of senior officials have been punished, including ministers, military officers, and party leaders.
Viral images sparked a flood of online reactions. Some users expressed astonishment at the sheer size of the alleged hoard, while others used dark humor, comparing the official to fictional characters like Scrooge McDuck.
