More than 30 people have died in incidents related to heavy rains and floods in China’s capital Beijing. The country’s state media gave this information on Tuesday. With this, the total number of people killed in rain-related accidents in the area has risen to at least 34.
State broadcaster CCTV said that by midnight on Monday, 28 people were reported dead in Beijing’s worst-affected Miyun district and two in Yanqing district. Heavy rains occurred in the area overnight.
According to CCTV, more than 80,000 people have been evacuated to safer places in Beijing, including about 17,000 people from Miyun.
Earlier on Monday, according to reports, four people were killed in a landslide in neighboring Hebei province, while eight others are still missing. The landslide occurred in a rural area of Luanping County in Hebei.
A local resident told the state-run Beijing News that communications were down and he was unable to contact his relatives.
According to China’s Ministry of Water Resources, authorities released water from a reservoir in Miyun district. The reservoir is at its highest level since its construction in 1959.
