A controversy has erupted in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh over a question paper issued by the education department. The question paper, used for the mid-term examination of fourth-grade students in government schools, has been accused of hurting religious sentiments due to the nature of the questions asked.
In fact, the objective question in the English question paper asked, “What is the name of Mona’s dog?”, and one of the four options given was “Ram.” The inclusion of the name “Ram” as a possible answer to the question about the dog’s name has sparked strong protests from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Enraged workers of the Hindu organization burned an effigy of the education department official, chanted slogans, and demanded strict action against the responsible officer. Meanwhile, senior officials of the education department have attributed the mistake to a printing press error and have apologized for the mistake.
The incident occurred during the half-yearly examinations in government schools in Mahasamund. On January 7th, the English question paper for the fourth grade contained a multiple-choice question that became the source of the controversy. The question asked, “What is the name of Mona’s dog?” The four options were: a) Bala, b) No one is mentioned, c) Sheru, d) Ram. This angered the Hindu organization, which claimed that it hurt religious sentiments. A large number of Hindu activists gathered at the District Education Officer’s office, chanted slogans, burned an effigy of the District Education Officer, and submitted a memorandum to the Collector demanding action.
The District Education Officer stated that the printed paper was not prepared by their department. The paper they prepared was not the one that was printed. He attributed the mistake to the printing press and said that a notice has been issued to them. He also apologized if anyone’s feelings were hurt because of this mistake.
