Chawl structure collapses in Bharat Nagar area, Bandra East, Mumbai

A three-storey chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s western suburb Bandra in the wee hours of Friday. Municipal officials said that so far more than 12 people have been rescued from the debris.

An incident of collapse of a three-storey chawl has come to light in Bandra (East), Mumbai. The second and third floors of the ground plus three-storey structure in chawl number 37 collapsed completely, in which many people have been injured and have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

According to the information, this incident happened at 5:56 am on Friday. It is being told that chawl number 37 suddenly collapsed near the Namaz Committee Mosque located in Bharat Nagar, Bandra (East). Many people were buried under the debris due to the collapse of the chawl. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the fire brigade team reached the spot and started rescue to save the people. So far 12 people have been rescued.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) declared the incident as Level-I at 6:19 am. According to the information received so far, 7 people have been injured in this accident, who have been admitted to the nearby Bhabha Hospital for treatment. It is estimated that many people are still trapped in the debris.

Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, 108 Ambulance Service and BMC ward staff are engaged in rescue operations. Efforts are on to rescue people trapped in the debris. At present, the reason for the collapse of the chawl is not known. Investigation into the causes of the incident has been started.

This accident once again raises questions on the condition of dilapidated and unsafe buildings in Maharashtra. This is not the first incident of building collapse in recent years.

Earlier, on May 20, the second floor slab of a four-storey residential building in Kalyan, Maharashtra suddenly collapsed. This slab sank straight down, due to which people living on the lower floors of the building were caught in it. 6 people died in this accident.

Apart from this, on July 27, 2024, three people were killed and two were injured when a four-storey building collapsed in Belapur area of Navi Mumbai.
