The campaign for the Telangana Assembly elections ended on Tuesday evening. On the last day of campaigning, top leaders of the ruling BRS, Congress and BJP came out in full force and addressed election rallies at many places across the state and also held road shows and appealed to the people to vote. Candidates and their parties made a last ditch effort today to woo voters.
Motorcycle rallies, padyatras, street meetings, public meetings and door-to-door campaigning continued till evening across the state. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and state Congress chief Revanth Reddy ended their campaign with a road show in Hyderabad’s Malkajgiri constituency in support of party candidate Maynampally Hanumantha Rao.
Meanwhile, BRS President and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao held his last election rally today in Gajwel constituency from where he is contesting again. He is also contesting from Kamareddy. His son and BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao addressed an election rally here.
Just over 3.26 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in Thursday’s elections. A total of 2,290 candidates are in the fray for 119 seats. Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj said in Hyderabad that the campaign ended at 5 pm today. Now on November 30, voting will be held on all 119 seats of the state, for which all preparations have been made.
During the election campaign, there was a lot of mudslinging between the three major political parties and leaders of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in Hyderabad. BRS sought a fresh mandate based on its performance during the last two terms. The Congress, hoping to repeat its recent success in neighboring Karnataka, tried to woo voters with six guarantees.
Whereas, BJP sought a chance for a double engine government to accelerate the pace of development and promised to have a Chief Minister from a backward class. Both Congress and BJP attacked KCR over family rule and corruption during the last 10 years. At the same time, BRS warned the people that the Congress government would destroy all the progress achieved by the state during the last decade. Congress leaders accused BRS, BJP and AIMIM of collusion, while BJP claimed that Congress, BRS and AIMIM are in collusion.
Rahul Gandhi led the Congress campaign by addressing 23 public meetings. His sister Priyanka Gandhi held 26 rallies. Revanth Reddy, seen as the chief ministerial face, addressed 55 public meetings in several parts of the state. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, actor-politician Vijayashanti, who recently left BJP and joined Congress, also campaigned for the party.
BRS is contesting all 119 seats on its own. Congress has left one seat for the Communist Party of India (CPI). The BJP has fielded candidates in 111 constituencies and left the remaining eight for its ally Jana Sena Party (JSP) led by actor-politician Pawan Kalyan. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting on all the seats.
BRS’s ally AIMIM is in the fray in nine constituencies, all of which are in Hyderabad. In the rest of the state it has announced support to BRS. For BRS, KCR led the campaign by holding 96 election rallies across the state. His son KT. Rama Rao and nephew T. Harish Rao also held public meetings and road shows in different parts of the state.
On behalf of BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J.P. Nadda addressed election rallies across the state. Modi, who concluded his three-day campaign in the state on Monday, addressed eight public meetings and held a road show. Amit Shah, who campaigned for eight days, addressed 17 public meetings and held seven road shows.
J P Nadda addressed eight public meetings and participated in three road shows. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, Anurag Singh Thakur, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other leaders. Also campaigned vigorously for BJP.
