Bodies Of Indians Killed In Kuwait Charred, IAF Plane To Bring Them Home

The External Affairs Minister spoke to his Kuwaiti counterpart Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya over the phone and requested him to send the bodies of Indians who lost their lives due to the fire to India at the earliest.

Kuwait authorities are conducting DNA tests on the bodies of those killed in a massive fire in a building in Mangaf area and an Indian Air Force plane has been kept ready to bring back the bodies of the Indians killed in the accident. Officials gave this information on Thursday.

On the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh has left for Kuwait to monitor the relief of Indians injured in the fire and to bring back the bodies of those killed as soon as possible.

Officials said that a total of 49 people died in the fire in the Al-Mangaf building and 42 of them are believed to be Indians, the rest were citizens of Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt and Nepal.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday night saying, “About 40 of the people killed in an unfortunate and tragic incident of fire in a residential building in the Mangaf area of ​​Kuwait in the early hours of today (Wednesday) are believed to be Indians.”

Prime Minister Modi termed the incident as ‘tragic’ and reviewed the situation by holding a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary PK Mishra, among others.

After the meeting, Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased Indians from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and directed that the government provide all possible assistance.

Jaishankar posted on ‘X’, “(I) spoke to Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya regarding the fire incident in Kuwait. (I) was informed about the efforts made by the Kuwaiti authorities in this regard. (I) was assured that the incident will be thoroughly investigated and responsibility will be fixed.” He said, “Urged to send the bodies of those who lost their lives in the accident to their country as soon as possible.”
