A case has been registered in Karnataka against BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya and Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly spreading false information among viewers on a complaint by Indian Youth Congress, police said.
According to police, a case was registered against the two on Tuesday at High Grounds police station on a complaint by Indian Youth Congress legal cell chief Srikant Swaroop B N under sections 192 (incitement with intent to cause riot) and 352 (insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The complaint alleged that Malviya and Goswami had “broadcast misinformation with criminal intent” and “disclosed false information” by claiming that Turkey’s Istanbul Congress Center was the office of the Indian National Congress (INC).
Swaroop said, “This act was done with criminal intent to mislead the Indian public, tarnish the image of a major political party, play with nationalist sentiments, create public unrest and undermine national security and democratic values.”
Swaroop said that this act of Malviya and Goswami has been taken up in the volatile backdrop of strained relations between India and Turkey.
Swaroop alleged, “The actions of Malviya and Goswami are an attack on India’s democratic foundations, public safety and national security. They broadcast false news with criminal intent which should be responded to with the strictest action.”
Swaroop has requested the Press Council of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, CBI and other law enforcement agencies to take immediate action on this complaint.
