Bihar Assembly Unanimously Passes 75% Reservation Bill

If this proposal of Nitish Kumar government is implemented then the limit of 50% reservation for backward classes will be broken and they will start getting 65% reservation. Apart from this, by adding 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS), the total reservation will become 75%.

On Thursday, Nitish Kumar government presented Reservation Amendment Bill-2023 in Bihar Assembly with the aim of expanding the scope of reservation, which was passed unanimously. With the implementation of this bill, the scope of reservation in the state will increase to 75%. The state’s main opposition party BJP has also supported this proposal. The proposal to increase reservation is being considered as a master stroke of Nitish Kumar before the Lok Sabha elections.

In this bill passed today from Bihar Assembly, there is a provision to increase the reservation of Backward Class, Extremely Backward Class, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe from 50% to 65% in Bihar. 10% EWS reservation for the weaker section of the upper caste will remain the same as before. Thus the total reservation in Bihar will increase to 75%.

RJD chief Lalu Yadav has congratulated all the people of Bihar on the passing of the resolution from Bihar Assembly. He wrote on Twitter, “Hearty congratulations to all the people of Bihar on the passing of Reservation Amendment Bill in Bihar Assembly. Now in Bihar, the reservation scope for Scheduled Caste/Tribe, Backward and Most Backward Classes has been increased from 50% to 65%. Including EWS reservation, the total reservation in Bihar will now be 75%.”

The Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal to increase caste-based reservation from 50 percent to 65 percent. After presenting the figures of the caste census report in the Assembly on Wednesday, CM Nitish Kumar had announced to increase the scope of reservation in the state to 65%. Nitish Kumar said that considering the caste survey data, there is a need to increase the quota for Other Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Till now backward and extremely backward classes were getting 30 percent reservation in Bihar. But after the new proposal, the benefit of 43 percent reservation will be available. Similarly, earlier the Scheduled Caste category had 16 percent reservation, which will become 20 percent. There was one percent reservation for Scheduled Tribe category, which will become two percent. Apart from this, 10 percent reservation for economically backward general poor class will remain as before, taking the total reservation to 75 percent.
