Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been found guilty of three of the five crimes against humanity charges. Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death.

The verdict in the case of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been announced. The court found Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been sentenced to death. The International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka has accused her of masterminding the killings during the August 2024 student movement.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India after the coup and has been living there for the past 15 months. During the verdict, the court cited video evidence accusing Hasina of ordering targeted killings, firing on civilians, and using helicopters and drones to target them during the July-August protests. The court stated in its verdict that the evidence also shows that
Hasina removed several journalists, politicians, and activists from their posts for criticizing the government. Bangladesh’s ICT, while delivering its verdict against the ousted Awami League leader on alleged crimes against humanity, said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina deserves the maximum punishment for crimes against humanity. The court found Sheikh Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity.
Violence is expected in Bangladesh today in the wake of Sheikh Hasina’s sentencing. A police spokesperson said that additional troops have been deployed in sensitive areas and patrol teams have been put on standby. It is worth noting that in the past week, there have been about 40 arson incidents (mostly targeting buses) and dozens of bomb blasts across the country, which also resulted in the death of two people.
