Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, froze on Saturday, with the minimum temperature dropping to minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
For the first time this season, locals were seen lighting small bonfires around drinking water pipes to prevent them from freezing at night.
Locals coming out early in the morning were seen wrapped in woolen clothes along with caps and mufflers which has become an essential part of winter attire apart from the traditional attire called ‘Pheran’.
“The minimum night temperature was minus 4.6 degrees in Srinagar, minus one degree in Gulmarg and minus 5 degrees in Pahalgam,” a weather department official said.
Today the minimum temperature in Leh of Ladakh region was minus 11.7 degrees, in Kargil it was minus 8.8 degrees and in Drass it was minus 11 degrees.
In Jammu division, the minimum temperature was 8.1 degrees in Jammu city, 8 degrees in Katra, 2.6 degrees in Batote, 0.5 degrees in Bhaderwah and minus 0.8 degrees in Banihal.
