At least 4 killed, some still missing, in avalanche in India’s Uttarakhand

Rescue operations are underway since the avalanche that hit Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on February 28. Chamoli DM Sandeep Tiwari said, “Late last night, doctors have confirmed 4 deaths. Earlier the total number was 55, but now we have received information that one of these employees was on unauthorized leave, and he had gone home. So now the total number has gone up to 54, out of which 4 people are still missing, rescue operations are on for the missing people.”

All the workers were engaged in BRO construction work near Mana village in Chamoli, located near the Indo-China border. On February 28, the glacier suddenly broke and 54 workers present there were caught in it.

After the accident, the Indian Army and other rescue teams started a rescue operation to rescue the workers trapped in the snow. During this, 51 workers were rescued, out of which four workers later lost their lives. Apart from this, one laborer has reached his home and the remaining four are being searched.

The Chamoli District Magistrate directed the BRO representatives to call the homes of the missing workers and get information. The BRO came to know that Sunil Kumar, a resident of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, has reached his home.

Meanwhile, an Air Force MI-17 helicopter, three Cheetah helicopters, 2 helicopters of the Uttarakhand government, an air ambulance from AIIMS Rishikesh have been engaged in relief and rescue work.

According to the officer, the operation has been resumed in Mana village on Sunday morning. The rescue operation was started once again this morning by the Army and ITBP at Mana Avalanche Point. 4 workers are still missing. One laborer has reached his home safely.

The four workers who are missing include Harmesh Chand of Himachal Pradesh, Ashok of Uttar Pradesh, Anil and Arvind Kumar of Uttarakhand. Apart from this, the workers who have died include Jitendra Singh and Mohinder Pal of Himachal Pradesh, Manjeet Yadav of Uttar Pradesh and Alok Yadav of Uttarakhand.
