Sixteen elderly people died in a fire at a retirement home in Indonesia. The incident occurred on Sunday evening. The retirement home was located in a single-story building in Manado, in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province. The fire broke out while the residents were sleeping, claiming the lives of 16 people.
15 people died from burns in the accident.
Police said on Monday that the death toll had risen to 16, with 15 people dying from burns and one from smoke inhalation. Fifteen people were rescued and taken to the hospital. Police said that the victims’ families have been called to the hospital for identification.
Firefighters said that six fire engines arrived at the scene after receiving the report of the fire, and it took them two hours to bring the blaze under control. Neighbors also assisted in extinguishing the fire. Based on initial investigations, police said the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring. However, the exact cause will only be determined after a more thorough investigation.
