Another horrific case of rape and torture has come to light in ethnic violence-hit Manipur. The 37-year-old victim, now living in a relief camp, has lodged a detailed complaint with the police, revealing the brutal crime that happened to her on May 3. This 37-year-old married woman has said in her complaint that 5-6 people caught hold of me and started abusing and beating me. Despite my protest, I was forced down. The victim alleged that “He then violently inserted his fingers in my private part. No help came from anyone despite my cries for help. Thereafter some more people joined him. At that time, I I fainted. Later when I regained consciousness, I found myself in a house surrounded by some Meitei people.”
The woman from Churachandpur district lodged an FIR and a separate detailed complaint at the Bishnupur women’s police station on Thursday, detailing the horrific incident that took place on May 3, the day caste violence broke out in the northeastern state. The non-tribal woman alleged that on May 3, when a mob attacked and burnt down their houses in Churachandpur, one of the most violence-hit districts of Manipur. Then she was trying to escape with her family and neighbours, at the same time some people severely assaulted and gang-raped her.
The complaint further stated, “I carried my niece on my back and also grabbed my two sons and started running away from the scene along with my sister-in-law. She too was running ahead of me carrying a child on her back. Then I stumbled and fell on the road and was unable to get up after running about half a kilometer from my house. My sister-in-law came running back towards me and picked up my niece from my back and ran with my two sons.
The victim also said that she did not disclose the incident earlier to save her and her family’s honor and avoid social boycott. The woman said, “Now, I have decided to come forward and file this complaint as I have started realizing the trauma and pain that I have been subjected to due to the heinous crimes committed against me without any fault of mine. Adequate punishment should be given to the culprits for sexually and physically assaulting me in the most horrific manner. Therefore, I am disclosing my story and all the facts because I feel morally obligated to report this horrific crime.”
After registering the FIR, the medical examination of the victim has been done. According to Imphal Police, Mahila Thana Bishnupur has forwarded the case to Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation. The woman was treated at both the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science, Imphal.
A gruesome video of two women being paraded naked on a street in Manipur on May 4 by a group of men was widely shared on social media last month, drawing nationwide condemnation and calls for action. So far nine accused seen in the video have been arrested. The Supreme Court had also criticized the Manipur government on this issue. Now another horrifying incident has come to the fore, which is raising serious questions on the condition of the violence-hit state.
