बिहार में पुल गिरने का सिलसिला जारी, भागलपुर में ₹838 cr से बना विक्रमशिला पुल ढहा

The spate of bridge collapses in Bihar shows no signs of abating. The latest incident occurred in Bhagalpur, where a large section of the historic Vikramshila Bridge—which connects the district headquarters to Naugachhia, the Seemanchal region, and the Kosi region—collapsed into the Ganges River on Sunday night.

Following this disaster, the bridge has split into two sections, bringing traffic on this route to a complete standstill. Fortunately, the administration had sensed the danger in time, ensuring that no lives were lost.
Confirming the incident, Bhagalpur District Magistrate Naval Kishore Chaudhary stated that the collapse began around 11:55 PM. Structural failure was first observed near Pillar No. 133. Subsequently, in a matter of moments—by 1:07 AM—a large section of the bridge plunged into the Ganges River. In a startling turn of events, this massive 4.7-kilometer-long bridge split into two pieces right down the middle.

Route Diversion: Travel via Munger and Khagaria

Immediately after the accident, Bhagalpur SSP Pramod Kumar Yadav and Naugachhia SP Rajesh Kumar took charge of the situation. As a safety precaution, the administration has erected barricades on both sides of the bridge. Traffic originating from Bhagalpur is now being diverted towards Munger, while vehicles approaching from the other direction are being routed via Khagaria.

The Bridge Was 23 Years Old; Cracks Had Appeared as Recently as March

Commissioned in 2001 during the tenure of Rabri Devi, this bridge served as a vital trade link connecting Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Surprisingly, reports regarding damage to certain sections of the bridge had surfaced as recently as March of this year; however, no concrete measures were taken to carry out repairs. Consequently, questions are now being raised regarding the conduct of the Bihar Road Construction Department (RCD) and the Bridge Construction Corporation.

Inquiry Ordered; Team of Experts to Arrive in Bhagalpur

The state headquarters has been apprised of this grave incident. A high-level technical team is expected to arrive in Bhagalpur shortly to investigate the causes behind the bridge’s collapse and to assess whether the remaining sections of the structure are safe. The collapse of several bridges, one after another, in Bihar over the past two years is now raising a major question mark over the quality of the state’s infrastructure.
