A tomato farmer in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh has literally hit the jackpot by earning Rs 4 crore in 45 days. With tomato prices skyrocketing, 48-year-old Murali’s fortunes changed dramatically. He not only sold his produce in the tomato market in Madanapalle, but also sent it to the neighboring state of Karnataka, as it fetched higher prices there.
Murali and his wife cultivated tomatoes on 22 acres of land in Karakamandla village in April. In the last 45 days, he sold 40,000 boxes of tomatoes. The farmer said the huge earnings helped him repay a loan of Rs 1.5 crore, which he had earlier taken for tomato cultivation.
According to Murali, this time the yield was good due to improvement in power supply. However, the steep hike in tomato prices proved to be the biggest change. Murali smiled and said, “I never thought that tomatoes would generate such a huge income.”
He plans to invest a part of the profit in expanding horticulture activities. Murli is the second farmer to earn such a huge amount.
A farmer in Telangana’s Medak district earned Rs 2 crore by selling tomatoes during the last one month, while another crop worth Rs 1 crore is ready for harvesting.
Bansuvada Mahipal Reddy of Mohammed Nagar in Kaudipalli mandal of Medak district became a millionaire overnight due to the skyrocketing price of tomatoes.
With tomato prices reaching Rs 150 per kg in the market and lack of adequate supply from Andhra Pradesh and other places, Mahipal Reddy catered to the demand in the Hyderabad market.
He sold the produce in the wholesale market at Rs 100 per kg. During the last one month, he sold around 8,000 boxes of tomatoes, each weighing more than 25 kg. The 40-year-old farmer, a school dropout, has emerged as a role model for all.
