Air India Statement

  • Air India stated that on October 4, 2025, the operating crew of flight AI117 from Amritsar to Birmingham detected the RAT deployment just before landing. Upon inspection, all electrical and hydraulic systems were found to be normal, and the aircraft landed safely.

The company stated that as per standard operating procedures (SOP), the aircraft has been grounded for a detailed inspection. Consequently, flight AI114, scheduled to return from Birmingham to Delhi, has been cancelled. Alternative arrangements are being made for the affected passengers.

An Air India spokesperson said, “The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. All systems were found to be normal, however, a detailed inspection is underway.”

What is a RAT (Ram Air Turbine)?

The RAT automatically activates in an aircraft when an emergency occurs in the main electrical or hydraulic systems. It uses the force of air radiated from the engine to provide emergency electrical or hydraulic power, thereby protecting the aircraft’s essential controls and systems.

Air India clarified that no system malfunction was found in this incident. This means that the RAT activation could only have been due to a technical alert or a sensitivity issue.

Alternative Arrangements for Passengers

  • The airline announced alternative flight arrangements for affected passengers.
  • A detailed inspection of the aircraft is underway and
  • it will not be put back into service until the investigation is complete.

Air India has ensured that all passengers and crew are completely safe.

Expert Comment

According to aviation experts, the activation of the RAT is a standard fail-safe aircraft safety mechanism. It helps maintain aircraft control and maintains systems in critical situations.

Despite this incident, Air India’s promptness and adherence to SOPs ensured the safety of passengers.
