Air India Express makes emergency landing in Bengaluru after engine catches fire

An engine fire was discovered minutes after the plane took off. The crew members informed the air traffic controller. The aircraft then made an emergency landing at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here.

An Air India Express flight from Bengaluru to Kochi made an emergency landing in Bengaluru after one of its engines caught fire. Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) gave this information on Sunday. Air India Express issued a statement regarding the incident saying that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft and no one was injured.

According to reports, an engine fire was detected minutes after the plane took off. The crew members informed the air traffic controller. The aircraft then made an emergency landing at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here and the fire was brought under control.

A BIAL spokesperson said, “On May 18, 2024, the aircraft en route from Bengaluru to Kochi made an emergency landing at Bengaluru airport at 11.12 pm due to information about fire in one of the engines.”

BIAL is responsible for the operations of KIA. A full-scale emergency was declared and the fire was brought under control immediately, a BIAL spokesperson said. All 179 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft.

An Air India Express spokesperson said, “A thorough investigation will be conducted with regulators to determine the cause of the fire.”
