Philippines: The Philippines evacuated hundreds of families ahead of Super Typhoon Fung-Wong’s arrival in Catanduanes and surrounding areas on Sunday, bringing life-threatening winds and coastal flooding. PAGASA, the country’s state weather bureau, warned that the typhoon, locally known as Uwan, could bring strong winds, torrential rain, and storm surges up to three meters high.
Typhoon Fung-Wong was expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility Friday night or early Saturday, moving westward before turning west-northwest. It made landfall on the Philippines’ east coast today with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 250 kilometers per hour, bringing flooding and storm surges to Catanduanes and surrounding provinces.
The tropical cyclone, classified as a super typhoon, is expected to make landfall late Sunday or early Monday in the southern part of Isabela or northern part of Aurora. Before reaching Vietnam, Typhoon Kalmaegi caused over 200 deaths in the country last week, with five fatalities. Signal No. 5, the highest level of warning for typhoons, has been issued over southeastern Luzon in the Philippines, including the coastal areas of Catanduanes and Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. Signal No. 3 alert has been issued for Metro Manila and surrounding areas, PNA reported.
The Philippine National Police said today that all police units nationwide are fully prepared to respond to emergencies and provide assistance to affected communities. Currently, more than 102,000 families, or approximately 319,000 individuals, are sheltering in 996 evacuation centers in the affected areas, the Philippine News Agency reported. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency in the country on Thursday, which remains in effect.
