He breathed his last at 11:15 at Max Hospital in Dehradun. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice—from 2007 to 2009 and from 2011 to 2012. He was also a member of the 16th Lok Sabha, representing the Garhwal parliamentary constituency.

Dehradun: Major General (Retired) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, the former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and a senior leader of the BJP, passed away on Tuesday at Max Hospital in Dehradun. He had been suffering from a prolonged illness. He served as the state’s Chief Minister on two separate occasions. Expressing his condolences on his demise, current Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also paid tribute to his contributions. It is worth noting that Khanduri had been unwell for a considerable time and was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
BC Khanduri Transitioned from the Army to Politics
Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri transitioned from the Indian Army into politics and assumed the leadership of Uttarakhand as its Chief Minister twice—during the periods of 2007–2009 and 2011–2012. During his tenure, he took extremely stringent measures against corruption and laid the foundation for a transparent and disciplined administration within the state. Major General (Retired) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri also served as a member of the 16th Lok Sabha, representing the Garhwal parliamentary constituency. He entered the political arena after retiring from the Army. His daughter, Ritu Bhushan Khanduri, currently serves as the Speaker of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister Dhami Also Expresses Condolences
Expressing his grief over the passing of Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on social media: “I have received the tragic news regarding the demise of the Honorable Major General Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri (Retired), the former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. During his time in the Indian Army, Shri Khanduri presented an unparalleled example of national service, discipline, and dedication. From his military career to his public life, his persona remained steadfastly dedicated to the national interest and public service.”
Chief Minister Dhami further wrote: “In his political career, he established a strong legacy defined by Uttarakhand’s development, good governance, transparency, and an honest work ethic. As a public leader, he took numerous significant decisions for the state’s development and, through his simplicity, candor, and efficiency, carved a special place for himself in the hearts of the people. His passing constitutes an irreparable loss not only for Uttarakhand but also for national politics. I pray to God to grant eternal peace to his noble soul and to bestow upon his grieving family members the strength to bear this profound sorrow.”
