A major tragedy struck the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, when an out-of-control truck overturned onto an auto-rickshaw parked on the roadside, resulting in the deaths of four people—including a newlywed bride and groom—who were inside the vehicle. In an instant, the joyous celebrations turned into mourning, and the scene was filled with screams and cries of distress.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 12:00 PM near Tongra village on Tongra Road, falling under the jurisdiction of the Sirsod Police Station. A heavy truck, laden with poultry feed, suddenly lost control and toppled over onto an auto-rickshaw that was parked near a petrol pump. Police officials stated that the accident was so severe that four people died on the spot, while others sustained injuries.

Among the deceased were 25-year-old Virendra Shakya, a resident of Rajgarh village (under the Tendua Police Station area), and his newlywed bride, Rajeshwari Shakya, a resident of Sanjay Colony in Shivpuri. The couple had tied the knot just the day before—on Friday—in a simple temple ceremony attended by close family members. On Saturday, they were returning to the groom’s village in the auto-rickshaw, accompanied by other relatives. Also traveling with them were the groom’s mother, Anvesh Shakya (50); his sister-in-law, Rajo Shakya (22); and his sister, Bhuriya Shakya (19).

The driver had stopped the auto-rickshaw near the petrol pump and had stepped out with a passenger to visit a nearby shop when the accident occurred. A speeding truck suddenly lost control, crashed with full force, and overturned directly onto the auto-rickshaw, completely crushing it underneath. The occupants of the auto-rickshaw were trapped beneath the truck and buried under the sacks of poultry feed. The scene immediately erupted in screams and cries for help.

As the screams rang out, bystanders rushed to the scene and began efforts to extract the people trapped beneath the truck. When their manual efforts proved unsuccessful, a JCB machine had to be summoned. Teams from the police and district administration arrived promptly at the site; utilizing an earthmoving machine, they lifted the overturned truck and extricated the victims from the mangled wreckage of the auto-rickshaw. The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced all four of them dead. The remaining injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, there were others accompanying the group who had disembarked from the auto-rickshaw; their lives were spared. It has been reported that the family, who was returning from a wedding, had another matrimonial ceremony scheduled for Saturday—specifically the ‘Lagun’ ritual for the groom’s sister, Bhuriya. Preparations for this event were complete, but the accident occurred before it could take place. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Preliminary police inquiries suggest that the truck went out of control, possibly due to a mechanical failure or driver error. However, further investigations are ongoing.
