Four dead, over a dozen fall ill in suspected hooch tragedy in Bihar’s Motihari

In Motihari, Bihar, poisonous liquor has once again cast a pall of mourning over families. This tragedy, which began in Balganga village within the Raghunathpur police station area, has claimed the lives of four people so far, while 15 others are battling for their lives. Most horrifyingly, six to seven individuals who consumed the liquor have completely lost their eyesight. Taking strict action in the matter, the administration has registered a case of murder.

Bodies Fell, One by One

The incident began on Wednesday evening when people in Balganga and surrounding areas consumed the liquor. The situation appeared suspicious on Thursday following the death of Pramod Yadav, but by Friday morning, it had turned dire. During treatment, Parikshan Manjhi (46) and Hiralal Mahto succumbed to their condition. Another individual also died under suspicious circumstances. It is feared that approximately 30 to 40 people consumed this poisonous batch, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further.

‘Everything Went Blurry Within Half an Hour’

The effects of this poisonous liquor were so lethal that people began losing their vision shortly after consumption. Rajendra Kumar of Laxmipur Gadariya, sharing his ordeal, recounted that darkness began to descend before his eyes just half an hour after he drank the liquor. Dr. Anoop Gautam of the Sadar Hospital confirmed that most patients admitted to the facility have exhibited symptoms of impaired vision. Currently, 15 people remain ill, three of whom are in critical condition.

Murder Case Registered; SIT to Investigate

This incident has sent shockwaves through the police department. A case of murder has been registered based on a complaint filed by the family members of the deceased, Pramod Yadav. Acting swiftly, the police have taken the alleged mastermind, Naga Rai, into custody. Additionally, six other suspected smugglers have been apprehended. Furthermore, Bharat Rai, the village watchman (Chowkidar) of Parsauna Panchayat, has been suspended. To conduct an in-depth investigation into the matter, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted under the leadership of the Sadar SDPO.

Police Appeal to Those Undergoing Treatment in Hiding

Acting on the directives of the SP, teams from the Cyber ​​DSP and the DIU are conducting continuous raids. The police are striving to ascertain the source of this consignment of illicit liquor and identify its primary supplier. Fearing social stigma and police action, many individuals are currently undergoing treatment in private hospitals while remaining in hiding; the administration has appealed to them to come forward and seek proper medical care so that their lives may be saved.
