सोशल मीडिया, गेमिंग ऐप चलाने के लिए KYC कराना होगा ज़रूरी! संसदीय समिति ने सरकार को KYC अनिवार्य करने का प्रस्ताव दिया
Preparations are underway to make KYC (Know Your Customer) verification mandatory for social media apps—such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X—as well as for gaming and dating platforms. The government may introduce strict legislation to enforce this measure. According to reports, a parliamentary committee has put forward this proposal with the aim of curbing cybercrimes perpetrated through fake accounts. Additionally, several states have already imposed age restrictions on social media usage to prevent minors from accessing these platforms.
Will the KYC Process Resemble Banking Procedures?
According to reports, just as KYC is a prerequisite for opening a bank account or purchasing a new SIM card, a similar KYC requirement may be introduced for creating accounts on social media, gaming, and dating platforms. Implementing this measure would help rein in fake accounts and tighten the crackdown on fraudulent activities conducted through them. The parliamentary committee has presented this proposal regarding social media and gaming platforms at a time when concerns regarding the online safety of women and children are already on the rise.
The parliamentary committee asserts that, in order to curb the proliferation of fake accounts on social media, it has become imperative to subject these accounts to KYC verification. In recent times, incidents involving harassment, fraud, and identity theft perpetrated through fake accounts on social media, gaming, and dating platforms have come to light. Consequently, if these activities are not halted immediately, the frequency of such incidents is likely to escalate in the future.
The absence of KYC verification makes it impossible to verify the true ownership of fake accounts utilized for committing cybercrimes. Furthermore, in cases involving cyberstalking, online harassment, and the non-consensual sharing of private images, identifying the actual perpetrator proves challenging; therefore, it is essential to link these accounts to a verified, real-world identity. Implementing KYC verification would significantly simplify the process of tracking such accounts.
KYC is Also Essential for Age Verification
In its proposal, the parliamentary committee also noted that several state governments have already announced plans to establish age limits for social media usage. In this context, KYC verification would serve as an effective mechanism for conducting age verification. KYC is absolutely essential on social media, as well as on dating and gaming apps, because numerous crimes are committed on these platforms through fake accounts by concealing one’s age. This has an adverse impact on genuine users.
