News of a major bus accident has emerged from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. A double-decker bus overturned, killing five people and injuring 16. According to reports, the bus was traveling from Punjab to Bihar. The accident occurred on the Purvanchal Expressway in Lucknow’s Gosaiganj police station area. Initial reports indicate that the driver dozed off. Upon receiving information, local police and medical teams launched rescue operations.
The bus was reportedly traveling from Ludhiana, Punjab, to Darbhanga, Bihar. Police arrived at the scene and began rescue operations. Chaos reigned at the scene. Several passengers were reportedly trapped inside the bus. The bus was lifted and moved to the side with the help of a crane. The death toll is feared to rise.
There were 40 people on board the bus at the time of the accident. Police personnel arriving at the scene managed to rescue those trapped. According to police, several people have been admitted to hospital and their condition remains critical.
The RTO administration stated that the exit gate was blocked and a seat was installed.
Prabhat Pandey, RTO, stated that they are currently inspecting the bus. They are also checking whether it was built according to standards. This includes counting the number of sleeper seats installed. The inspection will determine the extent of the violation. Prima facie, a violation of the standard appears to have occurred. The emergency exit gate has been blocked and a seat has been installed there.
