According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located at 36.71° North and 74.32° East, and a depth of 171 kilometers. However, there have been no reports of casualties or major damage.
Earlier this morning, a 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi, with a depth of 5 kilometers. No damage or injuries have been reported from either earthquake so far.
The tremors caused panic among the people, and some fell down. Those inside buildings and houses rushed outside. There was a general commotion, but no serious damage has been reported. The administration has increased monitoring of the situation and advised people to take precautions.
From a scientific perspective, the Himalayan region, including Leh-Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, falls under seismic zones 4 and 5, meaning these areas are highly susceptible to earthquakes. Seismic activity in this region is frequent due to the movement of tectonic plates.
