Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh Thakur, who is currently imprisoned in Deoria jail, suddenly fell ill late Tuesday night and has been admitted to a hospital.
Police said on Wednesday that Thakur’s health deteriorated around 11 pm on Tuesday, after which he was taken to Maharshi Deoraha Baba Medical College in Deoria.
After initial examination, doctors referred him to BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur for further treatment.
According to jail officials, Thakur complained of heart-related problems inside the jail premises. He was examined by the jail doctor before being taken to the district medical college.
Thakur was arrested on December 10, 2025. He is accused of misusing his position as Deoria Superintendent of Police in 1999, using forged documents, and fraudulently acquiring an industrial plot in his wife’s name.
Thakur has claimed that his arrest is linked to his criticism of the state government over the cough syrup case.
A local court rejected his bail application on Tuesday. His remand application is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday.
