The rupee depreciated 17 paise to 90.11 against the U.S. dollar

In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 89.95 against the US dollar. It then weakened to 90.11 per dollar, representing a decline of 17 paise from the previous closing rate.

The Indian rupee depreciated by 17 paise to 90.11 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday. ​​Risk-averse sentiment in the market and strong demand for the US dollar from importers weighed on investor sentiment.

Forex traders said the rupee is likely to remain under pressure due to weakness in domestic markets and continued outflows of foreign capital. Investors are also awaiting cues from the US-India trade talks, which could provide support to the rupee in the coming days.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 89.95 against the US dollar. It then weakened to 90.11 per dollar, a decline of 17 paise from its previous close.

The rupee had closed at 89.87 against the US dollar on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, fell 0.15 percent to 98.63.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex rose 80.15 points to 84,471.42 in early trade, while the Nifty gained 34.40 points to 25,792.40.

The international benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.22 percent higher at USD 62.35 per barrel. According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers on Wednesday, offloading shares worth Rs 1,651.06 crore.
