Four members of the same family died on Saturday when their car plunged into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials said. The accident occurred on the Drabshalla link road, about 25 kilometers from Kishtwar town, as the family was returning home to Dessa village in Doda after visiting the Sarthal Mata temple, officials added.
The victims were reportedly residents of Doda district and were on their way to the Sarthal Devi temple. A group of about 30 devotees had embarked on this pilgrimage, including these four individuals who were traveling in their personal vehicle. As the vehicle reached near Sarthal Gurash, the driver lost control, and the car plunged into the gorge. The accident was so severe that three people died on the spot, while the critically injured person was rushed to the district hospital in Kishtwar, but succumbed to their injuries despite the doctors’ best efforts.
The deceased have been identified as Ranjit Singh (42), his wife Jyoti Devi, their 18-month-old child, and Simran (18). All four were from the same village, Mangal Thatta, and the family had considered the temple visit a auspicious occasion, but fate took a tragic turn, devastating the entire family.
A pall of gloom has descended over the Doda region following the incident. Upon receiving news of the accident, police and local residents immediately rushed to the spot. Rescue operations were launched, and the injured were taken to the hospital. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh also expressed his deep sorrow over the accident. Posting on the social media platform X, he wrote, “Just spoke to DC Kishtwar, Pankaj Kumar Sharma. Saddened to learn about the tragic road accident on Sarthal Road in which four people traveling in a vehicle unfortunately lost their lives. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”
