A lawyer attempted to disrupt proceedings in the Supreme Court on Monday. He allegedly tried to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India (CJI), B.R. Gavai, according to lawyers present at the scene.
The incident occurred while a bench headed by the Chief Justice was hearing matters mentioned by lawyers. The lawyer approached the podium, took off his shoe, and attempted to throw it at the judge.
What did the accused lawyer say?
Alert security personnel in the courtroom immediately intervened and stopped the attack. The lawyer was immediately escorted out of the court premises. As he was being escorted away, he was heard shouting, “We will not tolerate the insult to Sanatan.”
The CJI maintained his composure
Following the incident, the CJI maintained his composure and urged the lawyers present in the courtroom to continue their arguments. He said, “Don’t be distracted by all this. We are not distracted.” These things don’t affect me.”
The Supreme Court’s security unit has launched an investigation into the incident. It is not yet known why the lawyer acted this way.
