पश्चिम बंगाल: दार्जिलिंग में भारी बारिश के बीच पुल गिरने से 6 लोगों की मौत
A major accident occurred in the Mirik area of Darjeeling, West Bengal, amid incessant rainfall. The Dudia Iron Bridge collapsed, cutting off Mirik and surrounding areas dependent on the bridge from Siliguri-Kurseong. Six people died in the accident.
Affected areas and loss of life and property
Local authorities reported that casualties have been identified at three locations in the Mirik area so far:
3 dead in Saurani (Dhara village)
2 dead in Mirik Basti
1 dead in Vishnu village
Relief and rescue operations were immediately initiated, but the threat of landslides and floods posed a major obstacle for rescue teams.
Road blockage, traffic disruptions
Following the accident, the main road leading to Darjeeling via Darjeeling was closed due to a landslide in Hussain Khola and a tree falling on Dilaram Road.
Only the Pankhabari road and NH-110 are now open to connect Mirik and Darjeeling. The downhill road (Old Military Road) from Kurseong to Darjeeling can be used as an alternative.
Administrative Response and Challenges
The local administration has ordered assistance to the families of the deceased. Relief teams, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local Home Guards are deployed, but the rescue operation is being hampered by continuous rain and terrain instability.
