US President Donald Trump’s administration has once again subjected Indian immigrants to inhumane treatment in the United States. This time, 73-year-old Harjeet Kaur, a woman of Indian origin, was deported after living in the United States for nearly 30 years. Harjeet Kaur, a resident of Mohali, Punjab, has now returned to India, but the treatment she received has deeply shocked her family and community.

Harjeet Kaur Deported to India in Handcuffs and Shackles

Harjeet Kaur had been living in the United States with her family for nearly three decades. According to reports, Kaur was deported to India in handcuffs and shackles.

Denied from Meeting Her Family

Harjeet Kaur was denied access to her family before her deportation. Her lawyer, Deepak Ahluwalia, stated that she was taken from Los Angeles to Georgia and from there, put on a flight to New Delhi. During this time, hundreds of her family and community members protested and demanded her release, but received no relief.

Allegations of Abuse at the Detention Center

Kaur’s lawyer claims that she was forced to sleep on the floor without a bed for approximately 60-70 hours in Georgia. She had recently undergone knee surgery, which made it difficult to stand up. Kaur was reportedly initially held at the Bakersfield Detention Center, then taken to Los Angeles in handcuffs early Saturday morning, and then taken to Delhi via Armenia via Georgia on a chartered flight.

Asylum Case Dismissed in 2012

Harjeet Kaur immigrated to the United States with her two sons in 1992. Her asylum case was dismissed in 2012. Despite this, she regularly reported to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office every six months. Her family says officials assured them that she could remain in the United States until the necessary documents were obtained.

Questions about the Trump administration’s policy

Kaur’s deportation has sparked deep outrage among the Indian community in the US. People say that such treatment of an elderly woman who has lived in the US for so many years is inhumane. The Trump administration has been accused of adopting an overly harsh stance against illegal immigrants and ignoring human sensibilities.
