During this time, hundreds of her family and community members protested and demanded her release, but received no relief.
Allegations of Abuse at the Detention Center
Kaur’s lawyer claims that she was forced to sleep on the floor without a bed for approximately 60-70 hours in Georgia. She had recently undergone knee surgery, which made it difficult to stand up. Kaur was reportedly initially held at the Bakersfield Detention Center, then taken to Los Angeles in handcuffs early Saturday morning, and then taken to Delhi via Armenia via Georgia on a chartered flight.
Asylum Case Dismissed in 2012
Harjeet Kaur immigrated to the United States with her two sons in 1992. Her asylum case was dismissed in 2012. Despite this, she regularly reported to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office every six months. Her family says officials assured them that she could remain in the United States until the necessary documents were obtained.
