The Pope said that the Church honours the courage of those who report in war. I am thinking of those who report at the cost of their lives – those who defend the right to dignity, justice and information, because only informed people can make free choices.

Pope Leo XIV on Monday expressed solidarity with jailed journalists and reiterated his commitment to upholding the “precious gift of free speech and the press.” He called for the release of the journalists as he spoke to 6,000 journalists who had come to Rome to report on the papal election.

Pope Leo received a standing ovation as he entered the Vatican hall for his first meeting with representatives of the laity. The 69-year-old Augustinian missionary, elected last week in a 24-hour conclave, called on journalists to use words for peace, reject war and be a voice for the marginalized.

The pope expressed solidarity with journalists around the world who have been put behind bars for trying to uncover and get to the bottom of the truth. He called for the release of the journalists amid thunderous applause from the reporters present.

“The Church honors the courage of those people,” he said. I am thinking of those who report in war, even at the cost of their lives – those who defend dignity, justice and the right of people to information, because only informed people can make free choices.”

The suffering of these imprisoned journalists challenges the conscience of nations and the international community, and calls on all of us to defend the precious gift of free expression and the press, the pope said. Leo began his address with a few words in English, jokingly saying that if the crowd still stayed up and applauded at the end, it would mean more than the applause they received at the reception.
