Congress MP Isha Khan Choudhary demanded immediate deployment of paramilitary forces along with police in the conflict-hit Mothabari area of Malda district in West Bengal. A senior police official said that at least 50 people have been arrested so far in connection with the clash between two communities on Thursday.
In a letter to Superintendent of Police Pradeep Kumar Yadav on Saturday, Choudhary said, “I request immediate deployment of police and paramilitary forces for patrolling including foot march on some routes to maintain peace and harmony.”
He urged police officials to take prompt and necessary action to restore peace. Officials said that at present, State Armed Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel are patrolling sensitive areas.
According to locals, the riot started on Thursday after a religious procession passed a place of worship in Mothabari on Wednesday evening. Arson, vandalism and attacks on people took place during the violence.
A police official said that apart from four companies of State Armed Police (SAP) and a large number of RAF personnel, another company of SAP has been deployed in the affected area. Officials said that as a precautionary measure, internet services have been shut down in Mothabari and surrounding areas since Friday.
However, West Bengal minister and local MLA Sabina Yasmin said on Friday that prohibitory orders have not been imposed in the area due to the upcoming Ram Navami and Eid festivals.
The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Malda District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to file an action report on the violence by April 3.
