AP Singh, the lawyer of self-proclaimed Baba Bhole Baba, in whose satsang in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh recently 121 people died in a stampede, on Sunday alleged that eyewitnesses told him that during the satsang in Hathras on July 2, some people in the crowd opened cans filled with poisonous substance, which caused the stampede. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Singh also alleged a conspiracy behind the stampede and said it was hatched due to the “growing popularity” of Bhole Baba. 121 people, mostly women, were killed in the stampede after a ‘satsang’ of self-styled godman Surajpal alias Narayan Sakar Hari alias ‘Bhole Baba’ in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. “Eyewitnesses contacted me and informed that 15-16 people had come there carrying cans of poisonous substance, which they opened in the crowd. I have seen the postmortem reports of those killed and it shows that they died due to suffocation and not due to injuries,” Singh claimed. Alleging a conspiracy behind the stampede, he said, “Vehicles were parked at the spot to help people escape. We have evidence and we will produce them. This is the first time I am speaking about it.” Singh claimed that the witnesses who contacted him requested not to be named. “We will seek security for them,” he said.

So far, nine people, including prime accused Devprakash Madhukar, have been arrested in connection with the stampede. On Saturday, the Hathras police said it was also probing the suspected funding of the ‘satsang’ by a political party in which “strictest possible” action could be taken. Madhukar was the main organiser and fundraiser of the ‘satsang’, where over 2.5 lakh people gathered as against the permitted limit of 80,000, officials said.

The self-styled godman is not named as an accused in the FIR lodged at the local Sikandra Rao police station. Asked if Surajpal alias ‘Bhole Baba’ would also be questioned, a member of the inquiry commission said the judicial commission constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government would speak to anyone required for its probe.

Meanwhile, Commission Chairman and retired Allahabad High Court judge Brijesh Kumar Srivastava told reporters in Hathras that the Commission will soon issue a public notice, asking local people and witnesses to share any evidence related to the stampede.
