There have been 800 earthquakes in Iceland in 14 hours. The tremors were felt in the southwestern Reykjanes Peninsula, following a series of powerful earthquakes. Due to this, a state of emergency was declared on Friday.

It is believed that these earthquakes are a sign of a major volcanic eruption coming soon.

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management reported that the national police chief has declared a state of emergency due to the earthquake in Sundhanjukkagir, north of Grindavik. The administration has warned that in the coming times, more severe earthquakes than before may occur. This series of events can lead to a large volcanic eruption.

Volcanic eruption may occur in the coming days

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said an eruption could occur in the coming days. The village of Grindavik is located about three kilometers south-west of the area where Friday’s earthquake struck. About four thousand people live here. If there is a volcanic eruption, all the people from this village will be evacuated. Preparations have been made for this. On Friday, two strong earthquakes were felt about 40 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik.

Magma accumulating at a depth of five kilometers

According to the IMO, the strongest earthquake, which occurred north of Reykjavik, had a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake damaged the north-south road to Grindavik, resulting in police closure. Nearly 24,000 tremors have been recorded in Iceland since late October through Friday. IMO has reported accumulation of magma at a depth of about five kilometers. There is a danger of it moving towards the surface due to earthquakes, which may lead to volcanic eruption. Magma may take days rather than hours to reach the surface.
