Dalit prof alleges assault, molestation at BHU; FIR names 2 faculty, 2 students

A female Dalit professor at Banaras Hindu University has lodged an FIR of sexual harassment and harassment. Four people including two women have been named in this case.

A case of sexual exploitation, harassment and attack on a female assistant professor has come to light in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The woman alleges that two female assistant professors and two students from her department sexually exploited and attacked her. Although the incident took place on May 22, but after internal departmental investigation, a police FIR has been registered now (August 27).

According to the news of the English newspaper Indian Express, in her complaint, a senior faculty member of the department has alleged that the accused from her own department usually talk about ‘making her naked and roaming around the campus’. The complaint states that “On May 22, at around 2 pm, one of the accused came to my room and said that I would be removed from my post and killed. When I came out of my chamber, the other accused closed the door of the department. One of these men caught hold of me and tore my clothes while touching me in an objectionable manner. Others recorded the incident. Another one attacked me with kicks and punches. When I started screaming, some people came to my rescue. I am attaching the CCTV recording of this incident with the complaint.”

Speaking to The Indian Express, this woman professor said, “I am being targeted just because I am a Dalit. The whole issue is that I refused to remove someone from his position. They were pressurizing me about this, which I refused to do, so they did this to me.”

The female assistant professor told The Indian Express, “I gave several complaints to the police and other officials in this regard. But the FIR was registered only after I wrote to the Human Resource Development Ministry, the Scheduled Caste/Tribe Commission and the Chief Minister’s Office about this.”

In this regard, Varanasi’s Assistant Commissioner of Police Praveen Kumar said, “After preliminary investigation in connection with the incident, an FIR has been registered under the provisions of CrPC. The investigation of the case is ongoing.”

On the other hand, Banaras Hindu University PRO Rajesh Singh said while talking to Indian Express that action will be taken in the matter as per procedure. He said, “The case is now with the police, so they will investigate and we will follow the process.” The Vice-Chancellor of the University has not responded to this.

IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 354-B (assault on a woman by force or with intent to tear off her clothes), 504 (disruption of the peace) against the accused in the FIR A case has been registered under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Apart from this, sections of SC-ST Act have also been imposed.
