From October 1, 2026, biometric verification via Aadhaar will be mandatory for booking subsidized domestic gas cylinders, whereas those purchasing non-subsidized gas will be exempt from this requirement.

There have been continuous changes regarding LPG, and now, another rule concerning LPG booking is set to come into effect on October 1st. According to the government, completing Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will be mandatory for booking subsidized domestic LPG cylinders. This means that consumers who have not yet undergone biometric Aadhaar verification must complete this process before they can purchase cylinders at subsidized rates.
Out of the active domestic LPG consumers in the country, 27.43 crore—or 89.9 percent—have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication. Such consumers will not need to go through the process again, and their LPG bookings will continue as usual. On the other hand, approximately 2.47 crore consumers have not yet completed Aadhaar verification. These customers must complete the process before October 1st to avoid any issues with booking subsidized cylinders.
Aadhaar verification can be done from the comfort of your home
The government has provided customers with several options for Aadhaar verification. BAA can be completed via the delivery personnel’s mobile app at the time of LPG cylinder delivery. Additionally, the process can be completed by visiting the LPG distributor’s showroom. There is also an option to complete Aadhaar verification from home using the mobile app of the respective oil marketing company.
Indane customers can complete Aadhaar verification via the IndianOil ONE app. This facility is available to Bharatgas customers through the HelloBPCL app and to HP Gas customers through the HP PAY app. According to the government, over 12 crore SMS and WhatsApp messages have been sent to consumers during the campaign that has been running since October 2023. Separate Option for Non-Subsidized LPG Consumers
If a consumer does not wish to undergo biometric Aadhaar authentication (BAA) and prefers to purchase a non-subsidized LPG cylinder, BAA will not be mandatory for them. Such customers can register their preference for non-subsidized LPG through their Oil Marketing Company’s (OMC) digital channels, mobile app, WhatsApp chatbot, or IVRS. Subsequently, they will be supplied LPG at the market price. Depending on local availability, 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders may also be obtained.
The government had initially set the deadline for completing BAA as June 30, 2026. This deadline was extended multiple times to provide consumers with extra time, with the final deadline ultimately set for September 14, 2026. Now, completing BAA will be mandatory for booking subsidized domestic LPG cylinders starting October 1. According to government data, the implicit subsidy—representing the difference between the actual cost and the selling price—for a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder was approximately ₹210 per cylinder in September 2026, compared to about ₹721 in June 2026.
For LPG subsidies, the government provided ₹22,000 crore in compensation to OMCs during the 2022-23 financial year. An allocation of ₹30,000 crore is being made for the financial years 2025-26 and 2026-27. The government has urged domestic LPG consumers to complete their BAA before October 1.
