Punjab: A shutdown (bandh) is underway across Punjab starting at 7 AM, called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha to demand the release of ‘Bandi Singhs’ (Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentences). The shutdown will continue until 2 PM. Markets, highways, and public transport in the state are likely to be affected due to the support of farmer and Sikh organizations. Several groups, including the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal), have backed the call.

The Morcha states that many ‘Bandi Singhs’ have completed their prison terms yet remain incarcerated. Terming this a violation of human rights, the Morcha is demanding their release from both the central and state governments. The shutdown has been organized today to press for this demand.

Impact on Highways and Transport; Essential Services Exempted

Morcha convener Gurdeep Singh Bathinda stated that highway traffic might be disrupted during the shutdown. Transport unions have been urged to keep buses and trucks off the roads until 2 PM. However, essential services like ambulances will be allowed to operate. People traveling for weddings or funerals have also been granted exemption.

The Morcha has appealed to traders and shopkeepers to voluntarily keep markets closed; discussions regarding this are also being held with the Punjab Pradesh Vyapar Mandal. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has also appealed to shopkeepers and establishments to extend their support during the seven-hour shutdown.

Impact on Schools, Colleges, and Industrial Operations

In view of the shutdown, the Morcha has appealed for schools and colleges to remain closed as well. Several private schools are considering keeping their campuses shut on Friday, although no official directive has been issued regarding government schools. Milk vendors have been asked to distribute milk either before 7 AM or in the evening.

Industrial areas are also expected to be affected by the shutdown. The Morcha has clarified that no obstruction will be caused to factory shifts that begin before 7 AM. Meanwhile, a warning has been issued prohibiting workers from moving on the roads between 7 AM and 2 PM. This could disrupt operations in industrial areas during this period.
