A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island on Tuesday. The tremors were powerful enough to drive residents out of their homes in fear across several areas. The earthquake’s epicenter was reported to be at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers below the surface.

According to Indonesia’s geophysics agency, BMKG, the epicenter was located about 42 kilometers southeast of the city of Palu. This region is known for seismic activity, as it lies within an active seismic zone.

Panic spread among the public immediately following the quake, with people seen rushing to safer locations in many areas. However, initial reports have not confirmed any major damage or casualties.

The BMKG stated that there is no tsunami threat following the earthquake. The agency noted that the situation is being closely monitored and advised the public to remain vigilant. Fortunately, there were no reports of significant sea-level changes or high waves.

Indonesia is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The country is situated along the “Ring of Fire,” an area frequently prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity; consequently, strong tremors are often felt there.

Experts consider a 6.7 magnitude earthquake to be powerful, capable of damaging buildings—particularly those with weaker structures. While there have been no reports of major damage so far, assessments and relief operations are ongoing.

Local authorities have urged the public to ignore rumors and to stay in safe locations should any aftershocks occur. In many areas, residents have gathered in open spaces to protect themselves from potential tremors.

As there is a possibility of aftershocks following the main quake, experts have advised continued vigilance. Disaster management teams have also been placed on alert. The situation is currently reported to be under control, and there are no reports of any major threat. Officials have stated that they are monitoring the entire area and that immediate assistance will be provided if needed.
