Normal life was affected in the Meitei-controlled Imphal valley and Kuki-dominated hill districts on Saturday due to a bandh called by various groups on the second anniversary of ethnic conflict in Manipur.

The Meitei Group Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called for a bandh in the valley districts, while the Zomi Students Union (ZSF) and Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) have organized a shutdown in the hill districts.

According to officials, ethnic conflict broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities on this day in 2023 in which more than 260 people were killed, about 1500 others injured and more than 70,000 people were displaced.

Markets remained closed across the state, public transport was off the roads and private offices remained closed. Few private vehicles were seen on the roads in the morning.

Schools, colleges and other institutions are also closed. Officials said security forces have been deployed at key places to prevent any untoward incident.

COCOMI will hold the ‘Manipur People’s Convention’ at Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal. It has urged people to attend the public meeting in large numbers.

A candlelight vigil will also be taken out in Imphal in the evening to pay tribute to those killed in the violence.

The Kuki community in the hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi is observing ‘Day of Separation’ demanding a separate region.

The programme will be held at 11 am at the ‘Wall of Remembrance’ built in Churachandpur town to commemorate those killed in the ethnic violence. The second programme will be held at 2 pm at the ‘Sehakken Burial Site’ where some of the Kuki community members killed in the violence have been buried.
