6 dead and more than 30 injured in a stampede that occurred at the Lairai Devi temple in Shrigao, Goa

According to eyewitnesses, the situation worsened after a part of the crowd lost control. Local people and temple volunteers ran to evacuate people safely.

Actually, the stampede took place in the Lerai Devi temple in Goa when thousands of devotees gathered to see and participate in the centuries-old ritual in the temple. Here the barefoot ‘Dhond’ walks on burning embers. Shri Lerai Yatra is organized every year in North Goa, in which more than 50,000 devotees come. This time also 50 thousand devotees had come. The stampede happened when the crowd started moving forward rapidly due to the slope at one point of the religious journey. After this there was screaming everywhere.

How many policemen were deployed

As soon as the stampede happened, the temple administration and police took action. The injured were admitted to nearby hospitals. North Goa Superintendent of Police Akshat Kaushal said that six people died and more than 15 people are seriously injured in the stampede at the Lerai Devi temple in Shirgaon. However, the number of injured has crossed 50. 1,000 policemen were deployed for this ritual. Drones were also deployed for aerial surveillance on the activities of the crowd. Despite this, a stampede occurred.
