4-Year-Old Dead, 2 Missing After Boat Capsizes In Assam’s Brahmaputra River

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gyanendra Dev Tripathi said that a sudden storm accompanied by hailstorm and heavy rain occurred in many parts of the state on Sunday evening.

A four-year-old child died and two people are reported missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river amid heavy rains and storm in Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district. A senior official gave this information on Monday.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gyanendra Dev Tripathi said that a sudden storm accompanied by hailstorm and heavy rain occurred in many parts of the state on Sunday evening, due to which trees and electric poles were uprooted. And houses were also damaged.

He told PTI, “Yesterday at 5 pm, a boat capsized at Nepurer Alga village while going from Sishumra Ghat to Nepurer Alga Ghat. Local people have recovered the body of a child and two people are missing.

Tripathi said that the deceased child has been identified as Samin Mandal (4), while Kobat Ali Mandal (56) and Ismail Ali (8) are missing.

“An SDRF team has started the search operation this morning and divers from Dhubri and Goalpara districts have also been called,” he said. A team of National Disaster Response Team (NDRF) is reaching the spot to assist in rescue efforts.

The CEO said that ASDMA is sending drones for surveillance during the campaign.

He said that there were 15 passengers on board the boat and the remaining passengers managed to swim out safely with the help of local people.

Tripathi said that many incidents of lightning have been reported in many districts, but no casualties have been reported so far.
