Four children died and several others fell ill after allegedly consuming poisonous food at a government rehabilitation centre in Lucknow’s Para area, officials said. Around 20 children from the centre suddenly fell ill on Tuesday evening and were rushed to the Lok Bandhu Raj Narayan Joint Hospital.
Lucknow District Magistrate Visakh G. told PTI, “A total of four children, including two girls and two boys, have died in this shelter home. Their age is between 12 and 17 years. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and their viscera will be preserved.”
The hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Rajiv Kumar Dixit told PTI-Video on Thursday, “About 20 children were brought to this hospital from the rehabilitation centre on Tuesday evening. All these children are mentally challenged. Despite all efforts, two children died.”
Dr Dixit said two seriously ill children have been referred to another government hospital and the remaining 16 children are recovering.
The District Magistrate said that apart from the children admitted in various hospitals, a medical team has also been sent to the shelter home to monitor the health of the remaining children.
He said, “Around seven children have been kept under the supervision of a doctor in the shelter home. The health department team is monitoring the children in the shelter home.”
The Lucknow District Magistrate has formed a committee regarding this incident and officials of the Health Department and Food Safety Department have reached the hospital to question the affected children.
Official sources said that food samples have been taken from the rehabilitation center for examination. Action will be taken on the basis of the investigation report.
District Probation Officer Vikas Singh confirmed that there are 147 children in this center, including destitute and mentally ill children.
