Two passengers died and six others fell ill due to health complications in Kota-Patna Express (13237) on Sunday while traveling from Varanasi to Mathura.
Railway authorities in Agra received a call regarding the deteriorating health of passengers. Medical assistance was provided when the train reached Agra Cantt station on Sunday evening. These passengers were traveling in non-air-conditioned sleeper coach number S-2.
Although the cause of the passengers’ deaths is still unknown, several members of the group, including the dead passenger, reported feeling unwell.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of North Central Railway’s Agra Division Prashasti Srivastava said, “Railway authorities in Agra were informed about the ill health of the passengers on board the Kota-Patna Express (13237). The persons raising concerns were part of a group led by a team leader from Chhattisgarh. The group was in transit from Varanasi and was bound for Mathura,”
Agra PRO Railway said, “On arrival of the train at Agra Cantt railway station, medical teams were immediately dispatched to the train. Passengers who were experiencing symptoms like nausea and vomiting were immediately taken to medical care. But an elderly woman had already died, while a male passenger lost his life during treatment in Agra.”
Srivastava said, “Preliminary medical assessment suggests that the probable cause of the deaths could be dehydration or food poisoning. However, we still haven’t reached a definite conclusion.”
The PRO said, “It is learned that the group consisted of around 90 members, who were traveling from Varanasi to Mathura by boarding the Kota-Patna Express. Five of these passengers are currently under the care of the Railway Hospital in a critical condition, and another person is undergoing treatment at the emergency ward of the SN Medical College and Hospital in Agra.”
Srivastava said the identity of the deceased passengers is yet to be determined by the Agra Government Railway Police (GRP).
