The passage leading to the normal and emergency tunnels of the Dhauliganga power project got blocked, leaving 19 workers of the National Hydroelectric Corporation Limited (NHPC) trapped inside the powerhouse, officials said on Sunday.

Landslides caused by torrential rains in Ailagarh area near Dharchula in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand continue to wreak havoc. The road leading to the normal and emergency tunnels of the Dhauliganga power project got blocked, leaving 19 workers of the National Hydroelectric Corporation Limited (NHPC) trapped inside the powerhouse. Officials gave this information on Sunday.
Dharchula Deputy District Magistrate Jitendra Verma said that machines have been deployed to remove the debris and the road will be cleared by evening, after which all the workers will be able to come out.
He said that despite continuous debris falling from above, the work of removing the debris is going on with the help of JCB machines of Border Roads Organisation and Haulage Company. Verma said that all the workers are safe and they will come out after the way to the powerhouse is opened. He also said that power generation from the power project is continuing normally.
Meteorological Department issued alert
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for most of the districts of Uttarakhand on Sunday. Also, suggestions have been given about the predicted weather for the next five days. Due to this, the concerned district officials have also instructed the relief and security teams in their respective districts to be ready at all times to deal with any emergency.
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts of the state for both today and Monday. This situation is expected to remain till August 4.
Cloudburst, floods and landslides cause devastation in Uttarakhand
It is worth noting that in the last few days, heavy rains in Uttarakhand have caused devastation due to cloudburst, floods and landslides. On Friday, six people including a couple died. While 11 others went missing.
Officials said the natural calamity wreaked havoc in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Bageshwar districts where many houses and cattle were buried under debris, agricultural land was destroyed, several vehicles were washed away and connectivity roads were damaged.
